Northern Exposure - Works of Carol A. Wilson ArchitectNorthern Exposure translates Carol A. Wilson’s architectural philosophy into a tactile, visually engaging book. The design concept incorporates foldout plans, differentiated paper stocks, and a structured layout that balances text and imagery. By reflecting the local, material-driven essence of Wilson’s Maine houses, the book allows readers to experience the architecture’s intimacy, craft, and connection to landscape in printed form.
The book showcases thirty years of architectural practice, highlighting the intersection of modern design, craftsmanship, and regional identity.
By using foldouts and varied paper stocks, we created a visual and tactile journey that mirrors the evolution of each house from concept to realization.
The challenge
Integrating multiple paper stocks, foldouts, and mixed media required careful design planning to ensure visual cohesion. The project demanded a balance between showcasing large-scale photography, preserving the tactility of plans, and highlighting the subtleties of material choices inherent to Wilson’s architectural practice.
Our impact
Through innovative use of foldouts, varied paper stocks, and thoughtful layouts, the book highlights Wilson’s attention to detail, materiality, and local collaboration. It serves as both a scholarly resource and a visually engaging experience, reinforcing the significance of her work in contemporary architecture.
